Abstract
As the key to comfortable and energy-efficient buildings, adaptive facades must control not only the amount but also the direction of solar radiation entering the space. Controlling solar radiation is a major challenge because the angle of incidence of direct sunlight is constantly changing, while at the same time the requirements within the building depend on the occupancy, use, and operation of the heating and cooling systems. Visual and thermal comfort can only be ensured through the use of dynamic and, ideally, angle-selective systems. To account for their impact on energy consumption, the interaction between people and systems must be considered in the design process. The presentation will focus on complex fenestration systems: how they should be designed, how they can be measured and how they can be modeled.
Short Bio
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sabine Hoffmann has been head of the Department of Building Systems and Building Technology at TU Kaiserslautern (since 1.1.2023 "University of Kaiserslautern-Landau") since 2014.
After her studies in building physics, Sabine Hoffmann earned her doctorate in the field of thermal building physics at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Following her doctorate, she joined the facade construction company seele GmbH, where she was responsible for the building physics supervision of large-scale facade construction projects. After a few years in industry, she moved to the U.S. and worked there as a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California at Berkeley from 2010 - 2014.
As an expert in the field of thermal simulation of complex façade systems, Sabine Hoffmann has published numerous papers in Germany and abroad and currently chairs the VDI expert committee for the development of test methods for angle-dependent solar transmittance. Together with Prof. Dr. Andreas Dengel, she heads the Living Lab smart office space at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, where innovative approaches to improve thermal and visual comfort as well as energy-efficient control approaches are developed.
